Children should brush twice daily, especially before bed, using a soft or medium toothbrush and the correct amount of fluoride toothpaste. For children under 3, use a smear about the size of a grain of rice. For children aged 3 to 6, use a pea-sized amount.
Parents should supervise brushing and help children spit out toothpaste instead of swallowing it. As teeth begin to touch, flossing becomes important because toothbrush bristles cannot clean properly between tight contacts.
