Toothache can be caused by decay, infection, gum problems, cracks, food trapping, grinding, or trauma. If pain is severe, persistent, wakes you at night, or is associated with swelling, contact the clinic as soon as possible.
Painkillers may temporarily reduce discomfort, but they do not treat the cause. A dental examination and X-rays may be needed to decide whether the tooth needs a filling, root canal treatment, gum care, extraction, or another treatment.
