Root canal treatment may be needed when the nerve inside a tooth becomes infected or inflamed because of deep decay, cracks, trauma, repeated dental work, or a leaking restoration.
Symptoms can include lingering sensitivity, spontaneous pain, pain at night, swelling, tenderness to biting, or a pimple-like swelling on the gum. Sometimes infection is found on an X-ray even when there is little pain.
